Hockey Eastern Ontario (the governing body of hockey associations in our area, such as the NMHA) allows hockey associations in the area to create “roster select” teams. These teams, sometimes also referred to as travel teams, provide an opportunity for house league players in our higher tiers to be selected to a team of similarly skilled players in order to practice and play at another level in addition to their normal season.
The HEO policy guides how these teams must be formed and operated. The NMHA is creating roster select teams at the U15 and U13 levels for the 2024-25 season. The coaches and teams will be selected in accordance with the policy and begin operating later in the season. There will be additional team fees, for those that are selected, to fund these teams.
Implementation of Roster Select House League Teams 2024-25
The Roster Select teams will be governed by the HEO Policy 6.55 Select Team Program Policy for House League (the “HEO Roster Select Policy”), all other rules and policies of HEO, and the policies of the Nepean Minor Hockey Association.
Eligibility: U15 and U13 players sorted into the “A” division of that hockey season.
Coach Selection
Following selection of house league coaches, an expression of interest will be sent to coaches of “A” Division teams regarding head coach positions for the U13 and U15 levels. After House League sort outs, those who have expressed interest will be called for an interview with the selection panel.
The selection panel will consist of the U13 and U15 Division Convenors, the VP Programs, and the House Directors, as well as possible other members of the House League or Competitive Committees.
Coaches are to be selected based upon the interview and previous coaching experience. The Coach will not be announced until the player evaluations are completed. The Coach will not “protect” any member of a potential bench staff. The Roster Select team volunteers will be selected after team formation.
Player Selection
An expression of interest will be sent from U13 and U15 Division Convenors to all players sorted into “A” division teams at the U13 and U15 levels, including expectations for participation and approximate cost.
A nominal fee of $25 will be required to participate in two scrimmage sessions. Form and Spordle options to be provided for registration.
Those who have expressed interest will be evaluated over two scrimmages and/or practices , following the completion of House Team sort-outs and balancing. The House League player selection committee will consist of the U13 and U15 Division Convenors (evaluating their own level), individual independent evaluators (not associated to each division), among possible other members of the House League, VP Of Operations or Competitive Committees.
Player selection will be finalized by early November. A full roster will be submitted to the NMHA and signed by the Registrar. The team is bound by all policies applicable to NMHA’s house league teams and rules and policies of HEO.
Team Operations
Roster Select teams will be funded through their supplemental team fees into their Roster Select team budgets. Team fees will be capped at $350/player in accordance with the HEO Roster Select Policy. Teams may supplement team budgets with fundraising in accordance with NMHA policies.
