The 1977-1978 Indians team mascot was a very young Fred Brathwaite who went on to have a solid NHL career as a goaltender. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Brathwaite

We have another picture from 1970-71, courtesy of Mark Saikaley. He played on this "Kirk Builders" team as an 8 year old. He's the player, on the far left, in the second row. This was a "B" team, and we think it was "Tyke" level. Mark was friends with Derek Upton and Bobby Alletson, younger brother of Nepean's "Wall of Fame" figure skater Kim Alletson.
Henry Krusch, who played in the NMHA the first year it started, sent us these photos of two of the many teams that he coached. Actually Tracey, his wife, sent them in. There are many familiar faces and well-known names in these 2 photos. Henry also played hockey with the “Duke boys“, whose father was the first President of the NMHA.
Back Row: Henry Krusch (Head Coach), David Skanes, Mark Gallant (now Head Referee ODHA), Rob Smith, Albert Burrell, Mike O'Shea, Bill Runions, Marc Chiarelli (Marc is Peter Chiarelli's cousin, who is the GM for Boston Bruins), Bill Hunter.

Absent: Ian McBean (now a Barrhavenite).
This was the "hay-day" of Midget hockey and was still the "draft" year. This team was privileged to play in the Ottawa International Tournament against Detroit 'Compuware', whose roster included Pat Lafontaine, Al Iafrate and Alfie Turcotte! Our guys were no "slouches" either! Check out some of the names and where they progressed to.
Back Row: Jim Archie Mulligan (Head Coach; also was once the head coach of Kanata Jr.A), Henry Krusch (Asst. Coach; also coached for the Ottawa Capitals AAA & Cdn. Power Skating Assoc.), Dave Lowry (now coaching the Victoria Royals of the WHL, and once coached with the Calgary Flames), Eddy Sernoski (relatives playing in NMHA today), Andy O'Brien (played with Kitchener Rangers), Rob Lindsay, Sean Clement (played in Europe), Colin Cooper, Graham Cormack, George Dupont (Played university hockey), Jeff Chychrun (Played in the NHL), Gary Poirier, Stuart Deans (Trainer), Brian Lathem (Asst. Coach), George Cormack (Manager).
Front Row: Jim Sheridan, Terry Haydon (son of Andy Haydon - former Nepean Mayor and Regional Chair), Todd May, Tim Cordick, Don Young (played with North Bay), Malcolm Deans, Robert Brown.
We have some more pictures for your enjoyment. Wayne Hobbs, has sent pictures of the various teams he was on from 1967 to 1976.
These are Wayne's teams from Tyke to Atom, with any comments, as follows:
Tyke67 - Wayne (5 years old) is the first one in the front row on the left side, the coach is above him
Tyke68 - Front row, from left, is Darrell Petrie. His twin brother (Brian-?) is sitting beside the goalie 2nd from the right. Last player on right, in the front row, is Keith Fancy.
2nd Row-1st player on Left is Carmen Gentile, whose dad is the coach (standing behind him).
3rd Row-Left to Right-Wayne Hobbs. In the Middle is Mike Wats.
Atom69-70 - Wayne is at the top left in the back row.
Atom71-72 - The team name was Bells Corners Legion, and Wayne is in the middle of the 2nd row.
These are Wayne's Peewee teams. The 3rd picture is the same as the 2nd, but with some player signatures!
Peewee73-74-Michael Watson is in the middle of the back row. Wayne is beside him, 2nd from the right.
Peewee75-76-#? John Bernziger, #6 Josh Labbers(?), #8 Richard Duguay, #14 Peter Greenberg, #5 Gordon Creelman, #13 Jamie Casey (?), #? David Berqeust, #15 Adrian Belanger(?), #2 Greg Coffin, #9 Glenn Buchannan, #1 Dwayne Day, #11 Brian, #7 Allan Duguay, #3 John Barber, #10 Peter Miller, #4 Wayne Hobbs (2nd from right, front row).
These are some more pictures, of the initial 6 years of the NMHA (NHA), from Bruce Beacock, who now lives in Minesing, near Barrie, Ontario. He sent photos of his Nepean teams from 1965-1970. Bruce can't remember many names from the pictures, but if someone recognizes themselves or a friend, please let us know..
He also related that Tommy Manley (Elizabeth's brother) was his best friend, and played for the Raider AAA's, Pickering Jr.B's, Ottawa 67's and Waterloo University. Another good friend (who you'll find on the Splx Wall of Fame) was Ray Takahashi, and figure skater Kim Alletson was in Grade 3 with Bruce. Enjoy the pics (courtesy of Bruce)!
Tyke B(65-66) Tyke A (66-67) Atom B (67-68)
Atom A (68-69) Peewee B (69-70) Peewee A (70-71)
Atom A (68-69) Greg Pearson second from left in the upper row
Peewee A (70-71): Goalie: Dave Nabi
Note: Dave Nabi was the assistant statistician for at least one year, around 1977. The coaches used to call in their scores and he would type them up and run them over to the official statistician and they would change the old standings chalk boards in Bell and Merivale arenas...those were the days!
Thanks to Gord Godwin, now a Barrhaven resident, and still a "Nepeanite", we now have these great pictures from the first three years of the NMHA (or NHA as it was called back then). Gord is still involved with Nepean hockey, through his son.
You may also recognize a goalie in the third team picture. He now runs a well-known goalie school in Kanata. His dad was the coach of the team in this picture.
Points of Interest: The tiny NHA pennant on each boy's jersey. The "trapper" used by the goalie in the first picture. The uniform colours. No curved sticks. All skates are basically the same(even the goalie's). The "lucky" guys who had Leaf or Hab gloves (no "shorty" cuffs here...Don Cherry would be proud).
Gord has names for most of the "boys" in these pictures, but a few are missing or not spelled correctly. If you recognize someone (or yourself), send me an email and we'll update the names.
